7 Best Foods to Eat for Better Sleep Post-Partum

By now, we all know that fatty, unhealthy foods make you feel crummy and sluggish, but did you know that they can also affect how you sleep?

In my last post, I talked about the importance of getting enough sleep as a new mom, but during the first year of my daughter's life, I never really considered that what I was eating, might be affecting the amount of sleep I was getting each night.

You want to focus on a variety of unprocessed, whole foods high in antioxidants and fiber. Try to combine foods that provide different macronutrients (protein, carbs and fat). It's also a good idea to stop eating about 2-3 hours before going to bed - this was also something I struggled with as a new mom, because I often ate after my daughter went to bed.

Here are my 7 favorite foods that will promote a good night's sleep:

1) Whole Grains - quinoa or oats

2) Protein: poultry, fish, grass-fed beef, tofu

3) Leafy Greens

4) Pasture-raised Eggs

5) Kiwi

6) Milk or Cottage Cheese

7) Nuts

A balanced diet is so important for everyone, including new moms. It can help manage blood sugar and reduce inflammation, which is important for pain prevention and getting sound sleep. Getting adequate macronutrients (proteins, carbs and fat) also helps the body create calming chemicals like seratonin and melatonin - both helping you feel relaxed and sleepy.

No one food is the magical answer, but the foods above will help you get a much needed good night's sleep- even with a newborn.

Certain foods will help if you consume them right before bed (cherries, bananas, walnuts), but with the 7 foods above, it doesn't matter what time of day they are eaten.

If you're a new mom who needs help with getting more sleep, I am your girl. My 6-week Budding to Blooming Program starts this spring. During our 6 weeks together, I will give you the tools you need to set yourself up for a better night's sleep (yes, even with a newborn). I will also show you some simple recipes using the foods above that you can have on hand for those days you feel you need a little help in the kitchen. Spaces are limited, so please head here to set up a FREE consultation call - during the call we will see if you are a good fit for the program. We will also get to know each other - it will be fun!
